Hannah Tortoise with her newly-invented mobile backpack:

Why it's needed:

It works brilliantly and it means she can go outside to play when it's sunny in the Autumn now because we can still find her to bring her in for the colder nights.  Hearing the Indiana Jones theme tune ringing out from the undergrowth cracks. me. up.

If you've every wondered what a chicken watching a plane go past looks like, it looks a lot like this:

And another one of the girls, just cos:

I must take some recent pictures of the Kowalski Budgie, he'll be getting all jealous.

Much the same :) I know because not long before the plane, one went past. It was a busy day in the skies over our house yesterday.

I'm a bit concerned that the first hit when I googled 'superchicken' was 'SuperChicken.com - Free Hardcore Sex Pictures'

Eww.

I think you should make costumes for the girls for Hallowe'en. Solves two problems in one.

She's a tortoise not a turtle ;) Unless maybe they *are* called turtles in America. Here a turtle is a swimming creature whereas a tortoise is land dwelling. Or something. :) Not sure what a terrapin does that a tortoise or a turtle doesn't.

Hello!!

My brother pointed mt to your post. Nice tortoise!!

I'm a huge fan of turtles and tortoises. I have two red-eared sliders and an African spur-thigh tortoise named Fred. He's getting big fast so I may need a tracking device soon as well!!!

Awww look at him, he's lovely! Maybe we should send him on a blind date with Hannah. He'll have to wait until Easter though....she's just gone into hibernation :D

Well, I'm not sure Fred is old enough to go on a date with Hannah quite yet, he's only three!!

And also, Fred doesn't like to hibernate, so he might get lonely with Hannah asleep during the colder months. Then he might get to lookin' at other tortoises while she's sleeping. :)

It doesn't get too cold down here in Texas, so Fred just comes inside and basks under his heat lamps in the evening, and stays inside when it gets real cold.

What kind of tortoise is Hannah?

I'm not sure what kind she is....she's my sister's tortoise really but she stayed here when my sister moved out. I'll ask sis :) I shall pack Hannah a little suitcase and she can go on hols to Texas. I'm sure she'd welcome a bit of warmth! :D

3 may be a little young for her - not sure how old she was when we got her but she has been living with us for 23 years.....or perhaps she'd go for a younger man, hard to tell with tortoises ;)

"I shall pack Hannah a little suitcase and she can go on hols to Texas."--That's cute :D

I'm sure Fred would love to meet Hannah. Maybe she could teach him to calm down as he is rather obstinate at times, always demanding a snack and crashing around his enclosure like a little battle-tank crushing everything in his path. :)

(hey check me out all *remembering to log in first* )

I think obstinate is default setting for a tortoise. Hannah has been known to get quite cranky when the blackbirds steal her apple....

isn't she burying herself to hibernate for the winter? i thought it was kind of dangerous to keep them from doing that, as hormone levels fluctuate so much. we bury ours in a small temperature controlled fridge for a few months in the winter, after she gorges herself on food ... been doing it for 14 years, seems to work well.

She just does that to keep warm and have a nap. She digs herself in at night during the summer too, but she lives outdoors in the summer so we don't have to be able to find her. She brings herself back out early in the morning for a spot of sunbathing :D

In autumn when the nights start getting colder we bring her indoors to sleep and she digs herself in under some shredded paper :) She gets less and less active and she usually goes into her box and up into the attic to sleep around November 5th. She was a little late this year because it's been unseasonably warm.

I do like the sound of a temperature controlled fridge though - very high tech! I won't tell Hannah or she'll be getting Ideas.... ;)

Fred is in love

Hi again,

I showed Fred the pictures of Hannah, and he wanted to write her a letter, so I helped him out and typed it for him, as his feet are very stumpy. Perhaps you could print it out and read it to her when she's done hibernatin'.

(yes, I'm rather bored)

Dear Hannah,

My human has shown me you lovely picture and I think I'm in love. Let us not let the oceans separate us from each other, as my love for you is like a cactus flowering in the desert. Your olive shell and scales are the most beautiful I have ever laid eyes upon.

I see you like grass, Me too!!! There is lots of fresh green grass here in Texas, and it's very warm almost year-round!! Maybe someday you can come to Texas and we can bask in the warm sun together. Also, I can protect you from them nasty blackbirds. Do they think they're better than us because they are more highly evolved with their wings and all? I don't think so!! I'd like to see one of them blackbirds get in a tangle with a house-cat!!! No shell to protect you? Well that's just too bad Mr. Birdie!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!

I promise there are no pesky birds to steal your apple down here! Just a couple of dogs and I've already laid down the law with them!

Maybe when you finish hibernating we can get to know each other. Let us not let distance, age and species come between us!! Love conquers all my beautiful friend!!! The look in your eyes make the goose-bumbs rise on top of my scales.

One day we will be together Hannah.

Love,

Fred
